Prior to joining Regan Zambri & Long, Ms. Bertram was the director of Risk Management at Georgetown University Hospital and has almost 20 years of trial experience defending hospitals and healthcare providers in medical malpractice and medical device litigation.  Ms. Bertram made a conscious decision to join Regan Zambri & Long in order to use her extensive knowledge and expertise to advocate on behalf of patients who have been wrongly injured during the delivery of healthcare.

In her prior role, Ms. Bertram was responsible for development of the patient safety program at Georgetown University Hospital.  One of her primary responsibilities was the investigation and evaluation of potential medical malpractice cases.  Ms. Bertram was a member of key committees at the hospital, including patient safety, medication safety, physician credentials, and the Obstetrics Risk Reduction Task Force.  As a result, she has a very in depth understanding of how hospitals should operate safely and what safety standards should be in place in order to prevent patient injuries.  Ms. Bertram was also responsible for training the physicians, residents and nurses in patient safety topics including avoiding medication errors, wrong site surgery and other patient safety topics.

Ms. Bertram was also elected President of the District of Columbia Chapter of the Association of Healthcare Risk Managers of the DC Hospitals.  She is nationally certified by the Association of Healthcare Risk Managers (ASHRM) and regularly lectures at the national and local level to physicians, nurses and hospital administrators regarding patient safety topics.

For almost 20 years, Ms. Bertram's practice has involved major medical malpractice cases, nursing home litigation, drug litigation, medical device and product cases as well as cases involving construction accidents, injuries of railway workers, and major trucking accidents in the Washington metropolitan area and Texas.  Ms. Bertram was also hired by other trial attorneys to perform mock trials and focus groups and assist other law firms in the evaluation of the strengths and challenges in their personal injury cases.

Ms. Bertram has lectured nationally and locally in the field of personal injury and trial tactics.  Ms. Bertram appeared on CNN's Burden of Proof as a legal commentator.  She is a regular lecturer for various medical and legal associations, including her course on trial skills as part of the DC Bar Litigation Series as well as teaching the litigation tips section of the mandatory course for new DC attorneys.  Ms. Bertram also lectures at local law schools regarding medical-legal issues and trial advocacy issues.  She is a frequent speaker at Medical Grand Rounds at various hospitals within the region where she speaks to physicians and nurses on current patient safety issues.

Ms. Bertram has been certified as a court approved mediator for complex medical malpractice cases by the D.C. Superior Court, Alternative Resolution Branch.  In this role, Ms. Bertram assists parties and their attorneys in the evaluation and resolution of cases which are pending before DC Courts.  Ms. Bertram serves as a private mediator for attorneys in DC and Maryland who are interested in evaluation and resolution of their pending medical malpractice cases.

Ms. Bertram is currently authoring a chapter on Informed Consent for a major surgical textbook and has also submitted a major article for publication to a national medical journal on obstetrics.  The research article involves teaching physicians and residents how to avoid injuries to mothers and their babies during operative deliveries and emergency deliveries.

In addition to her professional responsibilites and commitments, Ms. Bertram devotes considerable time to many civic and charitable organizations.  Ms. Bertram is involved in activities to help the homeless and less fortunate with her church as well as acting as assistant leader of her daughter's Girl Scout troop and serving as Grade Representative at her daughter's school.  Ms. Bertram and her family live in Washington, D.C.
